The company says its automatic bank-reconciliation capability has already processed more than 100 million transactions. It also says accountants using the feature save around half their monthly bank-reconciliation time, although this is a company-reported figure rather than an independently verified productivity benchmark.

More important for founders is Xero’s ecosystem data. The platform now has more than 1,000 certified apps, while Xero says new app registrations have increased fourfold since 2025. Approximately 20% of connections into its ecosystem are now custom applications, and usage of its MCP Server increased tenfold between December 2025 and May 2026, exceeding one million API calls by June.

Fourfold growth in app registrations changes the opportunity

Those figures indicate that building software around accounting data is becoming easier and more common. Xero itself says it plans additional tools for small-business and accounting software builders.

What has been validated is developer activity and usage of Xero’s interfaces. What remains unproven is whether the rapidly growing number of AI-generated integrations will produce durable SaaS businesses rather than temporary custom applications.

That creates both the opening and the competitive risk.

The opportunity: vertical financial agents on top of accounting data

ThePionairs.com sees the strongest opportunity for founders who understand a specific industry where accounting triggers operational work outside the ledger.

A construction business may need to connect invoices to project progress. A staffing agency may need to reconcile payroll, placement fees and client billing. An importer may need to combine purchasing, currency exposure and inventory payments.

Instead of building another bookkeeping product, a founder can use Xero as the financial source of truth and automate the vertical workflow surrounding it.

Distribution may also improve because accountants already advising those businesses can become referral partners.

Analysis: build from one accounting event

Choose a vertical and identify one recurring ledger event that forces employees into email, spreadsheets or another system. Examples include an overdue invoice triggering collections, a supplier payment triggering inventory checks or month-end completion triggering management reporting. Build one workflow around that event and keep Xero as the underlying accounting system. This reduces product scope while preserving access to trusted financial data.

Run the workflow with five businesses over 30 days and measure completed actions per customer without manual intervention. Stop if customers can recreate the same result easily using Xero’s own expanding agent tools. A second-order opportunity is selling the workflow through accounting practices that specialise in the same industry.
