TerraPay says Xend connects to 3.7 billion wallets through a single integration. Alipay+ says its network spans more than 50 international payment partners, over 150 million merchants and 220 destination markets, including more than 10 national payment systems. The companies have not named the 15 African wallets in the announcement.

15 African wallets can reach 150 million merchants

The scale of the acceptance network is the central verified development. It gives participating wallets a way to extend domestic customer relationships into international spending without requiring users to adopt an unfamiliar card or separate travel-payment app.

What remains unproven is usage. Access to 150 million merchants does not mean African wallet users will transact abroad frequently enough, or at economics attractive enough, to make cross-border acceptance a major revenue line for every wallet provider.

ThePionairs.com sees the strongest opening for African wallet operators, travel fintechs and vertical platforms serving mobile-first customers who already keep money in domestic wallets. The new infrastructure can reduce the technical burden of international acceptance and create room for products around travel spending, loyalty, expense controls and merchant offers.

The most attractive SMEs are those with a defined customer corridor rather than generic global ambitions. A Kenyan travel platform serving customers visiting China or Southeast Asia, for example, may have a clearer product case than a wallet trying to activate every destination at once. The economic upside comes from higher wallet usage, retained balances and incremental transaction revenue without building bilateral merchant integrations.

Choose one destination where an existing wallet customer base already travels for trade, tourism, study or business. Build a simple activation journey explaining where the wallet works, how FX and fees are handled and what fallback exists when QR acceptance fails. Infrastructure reach only becomes a business when users understand and trust it in a real travel context.

Run a 30-day corridor test with a small traveller cohort and monitor the share of activated users who complete at least one successful overseas merchant transaction. Stop if FX, fees, failed acceptance or support load make the experience worse than cards or cash. A second-order opportunity is corridor-specific loyalty, travel insurance or SME expense products layered on the same wallet relationship.
